It is time for the Ordination of married men

From a very early age I thought that I was destined to be a priest . Then something extraordinary happened to prevent my ordination. I fell in Love. It seems so strange to me that I was denied the opportunity to be ordained because of Love when after all it was because of Love that I wanted to be ordained in the first place. I Love Jesus … I fell in Love with Him when I was a child . He was my childhood hero. I Loved how he Loved the poor and destitute . I Loved how he came to serve rather than to conquer. I Loved that he was prepared to suffer unimaginable pain and suffering during His crucifixion simply because He Loved all of us. I Loved Him enough to offer my life through the priesthood in the hope that I could resonate His Love into the hearts of others that they too may come to know His unconditional Love for them. Then I fell in Love and married my Love and my dreams of becoming a Catholic Priest ended. Or so I thought !

If there is one ray of light coming from the ‘Synod on Schysm’ that the Synod on Synodality has become it is that amidst the razor sharp battle lines that have been drawn between so called Traditionalists and Modernists around the ordination of women, the LGBTQ+ community , the blessing of same sex unions and communion for the divorced there have been relatively few missiles exploding around the call for the ordination of married men.

Of course this issue shouldn’t really be that contentious. Married clergy , including Popes , have been a feature of the Catholic Church since the Apostles :

“It is clear from the New Testament (Mk 1:29-31; Mt 8:14-15; Lk 4:38-39; 1 Tim 3:2, 12; Tit 1:6) that at least the Apostle Peter had been married, and that bishops, presbyters and deacons of the Primitive Church were often family men. It is also clear from epigraphy, the testimony of the Fathers, synodal legislation, papal decretals and other sources that in the following centuries, a married clergy, in greater or lesser numbers was a normal feature of the life of the Church. Even married popes are known to us.

Priestly celibacy in patristics and in the history of the Church“). Roman Cholij, Secretary of the Apostolic Exarch for Ukrainian Catholics in Great Britain

There are also score of married clergy with families who entered into the Roman Catholic Church due to Pope Benedict XVI’s 2009 apostolic constitution Anglicanorum Coetibus. The constitution authorized the creation of “ordinariates,” geographic regions similar to dioceses but typically national in scope. Parishes in these ordinariates are to be Catholic yet retain elements of the Anglican heritage and liturgical practices. They are to be led by an “ordinary,” who will have a role similar to a bishop, but who may be either a bishop or a priest. The first such Ordinariate, Our Lady of Walsingham, was established in the United Kingdom in 2011 and was closely followed in 2012 by its American/Canadian counterpart ‘The Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter’ . Based in Houston, Texas, this Ordinariate has more than 40 Roman Catholic parishes and communities across the United States and Canada. These Ordinariates facilitate the transition of former Anglican clergy who may be married with families into full communion with the Catholic Church.

The celibate priesthood has been a tradition since the 11th century, imposed in part for financial reasons to ensure priests’ assets pass to the church and not to their heirs. In the early church, Catholic priests were married.

They held services in their homes. Over time, power became rooted in Rome. Tithes were required from all “churches” and Catholic communities. A significant portion was, according to the customs of the times, produce from the priest’s lands: grain, meat, vegetables.

Another custom in effect was division of property at the death of the head of house. In some areas, lands were divided among all the father’s children. As not all the children were priests, the distribution of lands diminished the tithes the Pope received.

The practice of ordaining only unmarried men began in the 11th century, but did not formally become Canon law until the 20th century (1917).

The current Vatican policy is that marriage for priests could be reinstated Married priests are permitted in some eastern Catholic churches as well as where married Anglican priests have converted.

The Second Lateran Council (1139) made celibacy mandatory for future priests in the Western Church. In the last 40 years the Catholic Church has allowed some married, Protestant ministers to be ordained priests after they became Catholics.

CV NEWS FEED // German Bishop Franz Josef Overbeck said if the Catholic Church is going to continue to exist in Germany, the Church may have to allow priests to marry and to consider women’s ordination.

At a press conference for the Synod on Synodality over the weekend, Overbeck said Germany has a clergy crisis. In 13 years serving as the bishop of the Diocese of Essen, he said he has buried 300 priests and ordained only 15 seminarians. There are currently no seminarians in the diocese.

To address the shortage of priests, Overbeck intimated the German Catholic Church may have to look to the “Orthodox and eastern churches,” which allow priests to marry.

“How can we save the sacramental life of the Church? We must have priests and deacons,” he said. “Married priests are something normal in other religious traditions. Perhaps we will have to have a different answer at some point. Our situation is currently very difficult in [Germany].”

The farcical nature of Catholic doctrine on the ordination of married priests was brought into sharp focus in the UK in 2014 in the Archdiocese of Birmingham when Fr. Philip Gay who had served for 25 years as the parish priest of St Thomas More, Coventry made the fatal mistake of falling in Love with a Parishioner and was obliged to retire from the priesthood to marry the woman he had come to Love. He was replaced by a married priest with three children . The new priest was a former Anglican who had joined the Catholic Communion through the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham.

I could not understand why Traditionalists within the church had not been more vocal in their opposition to married Anglican priests with families being so warmly welcomed into the Church when it was these same Traditionalists who were incessant in their campaigns to prevent Roman Catholic married men from becoming priests. The answer is that the new ecclesiastical structures announced within Anglicanorum Coetibus were formulated to attract Anglicans who were opposed to the ordination of women, greater inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community , and the blessing of same-sex unions. In short, people just like them.

The document approved by the bishops noted that people of Catholic faith in the region have “enormous difficulties” in receiving communion and seeing a priest. It proposed to “ordain priests suitable and esteemed men of the community”, who had already had “fruitful” experiences as deacons and who “receive an adequate formation for the priesthood, having a legitimately constituted and stable family”.

Reformers say the change is crucial to meet the needs of the pan-Amazonian region but acknowledge it could lead to similar reforms elsewhere. Shortages of priests are so bad that some Amazon communities go months without a proper mass.

Now that married priests are so firmly established in the Church and so warmly embraced by a traditionalist wing who see them as significant allies in their war against the reforms called for across the globe within the Diocesan phase of the Synod on Synodality it has become increasingly hypocritical for them to continue to defy the god given right of Catholic married men to be ordained, in the footsteps of St Peter. The fact that they are so vocal in their fierce opposition to the Ordination of women, the LGBTQ+ community, same sex marriage and Communion for the divorced and yet quiet about the ordination of married men suggests to me that they are prepared to tolerate it if it means they get their way on all of the other big ticket issues. So there is hope for me still !

And if the Synod on Synodality results in the ordination of married men to the priesthood I will seek ordination and, with my beloved wife and child, I will focus the rest of my life on radiating Christs Love for his children, campaigning for the ordination of women, welcoming the LGBTQ+ community to share in Jesus’ unconditional Love for them, celebrating communion with the divorced and by blessing same sex marriages which are loving , faithful and committed.

And if the Synod kicks over ‘the Empty Chair ‘ ignores the Holy Spirit and rules against ordaining married men why should married Catholics with a priestly vocation worry when we can simply become an Anglican , transfer to one of the Ordinariates and become a Roman Catholic married priest that way . Job done !

The Lay Pope

“I may speak in tongues of men or of angels but if I am without Love I am a sounding gong or a clanging cymbal. I may have the gift of prophesy and know every hidden truth; I may have Faith strong enough to move mountains but if I have no Love I am nothing. I may dole out all I possess or even give my body to be burnt but if I have no Love I am none the better. Love is patient; Love is kind and envies no one. Love is never boastful nor conceited nor rude; never selfish, not quick to take offence. Love takes no score of wrongs; does not gloat over others men’s sins but delights in the Truth. There is nothing Love cannot face; there is no limit to its Faith, its Hope and its Endurance.”

Is Bishop Athanasius Schneider a smiling assassin ?

Bishop Athanasius Schneider

Bishop Schneider has sadly become an exemplar of one who Francis describes as

“.. Those who smile while stabbing you in the back..”

We should pray earnestly for Bishop Schneider that he may finally sheath his blade.

The smiling Bishop has once again sharpened his knife and seized the opportunity to openly criticise Pope Francis accusing him of a ‘betrayal of the gospel’. Bishop Athanaseus Schneider has defended his ongoing tirade against the Pope , this time because Francis took part in the Seventh Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions in Kazakhstan, by saying that his criticism is intended to be constructive and fraternal. It is neither. His are the avowed actions of a die hard traditionalist determined to undermine Francis’ Second Vatican Council inspired pontificate at every turn.

Bishop Schneider described Francis’ visit to the Congress of faith leaders from over 60 countries as a ‘great sin of omission.‘ His crude dismissal of other Faiths is particularly disingenuous when he is speaking in a country where only 2 % are Catholic and the majority (85%) are Muslim. His intolerance of other Faiths could be used as justification for the majority Muslim population to persecute Christians in Kazakhstan but instead he and our Christian Brothers and Sisters are allowed to freely express their faith without the prejudice Bishop Schneider personifies.

In his keynote address to the Congress Pope Francis called for “respect, sincere dialogue, respect for the inviolable dignity of each human being and mutual cooperation.” and embraced participants by saying that “Religions remind us that we are creatures; we are not omnipotent, but men and women journeying towards the same heavenly goal,” Bishop Schneider dismissed this in a thinly veiled attack on the Second Vatican Council saying that ‘Jesus Christ was not in a supermarket of religions’

I believe that it is Pope Francis, through tolerance, compassion, Respect and humility who will attract members of other religions to Christ’s Love and certainly not Bishop Schneider. For Christians there is only one Truth … Jesus Christ . The difficulty lies in how we portray this to other faiths .. Bishop Schneider has chosen confrontation and is closed and dismissive to other faiths which is never going to bring them to Christ whereas Pope Francis is open and engaging and personifies the Love of our Saviour. Be honest Sisters and Brothers, who do you think will attract adherents of other faiths to Christ?

Praise be to you, my Lord

This month, July 2022, has seen some of the hottest days on record. We are destroying Our Common Home at a faster rate than ever. Every Catholic on Earth needs to listen to and act on the message within Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si . Visit http://www.laudatosi.va now to learn more.

We have to realise that a true ecological approach always becomes a social approach; it must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.” Pope Francis Laudato Si p.27

The Letter of Chief Seattle

” Praise be to you, my Lord, through

our Sister, Mother Earth , who sustains and governs us

and who produces various fruit with

coloured flowers and herbs .”

St Francis of Assisi

“The President in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land. But how can you buy or sell the sky? the land? The idea is strange to us. If we do not own the freshness of the air and the sparkle of the water, how can you buy them?

Every part of the earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every meadow, every humming insect. All are holy in the memory and experience of my people.

We know the sap which courses through the trees as we know the blood that courses through our veins. We are part of the earth and it is part of us. The perfumed flowers are our sisters. The bear, the deer, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The rocky crests, the dew in the meadow, the body heat of the pony, and man all belong to the same family.

The shining water that moves in the streams and rivers is not just water, but the blood of our ancestors. If we sell you our land, you must remember that it is sacred. Each glossy reflection in the clear waters of the lakes tells of events and memories in the life of my people. The water’s murmur is the voice of my father’s father.

The rivers are our brothers. They quench our thirst. They carry our canoes and feed our children. So you must give the rivers the kindness that you would give any brother.

If we sell you our land, remember that the air is precious to us, that the air shares its spirit with all the life that it supports. The wind that gave our grandfather his first breath also received his last sigh. The wind also gives our children the spirit of life. So if we sell our land, you must keep it apart and sacred, as a place where man can go to taste the wind that is sweetened by the meadow flowers.

Will you teach your children what we have taught our children? That the earth is our mother? What befalls the earth befalls all the sons of the earth.

This we know: the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the blood that unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.

One thing we know: our God is also your God. The earth is precious to him and to harm the earth is to heap contempt on its creator.

Your destiny is a mystery to us. What will happen when the buffalo are all slaughtered? The wild horses tamed? What will happen when the secret corners of the forest are heavy with the scent of many men and the view of the ripe hills is blotted with talking wires? Where will the thicket be? Gone! Where will the eagle be? Gone! And what is to say goodbye to the swift pony and then hunt? The end of living and the beginning of survival.

When the last red man has vanished with this wilderness, and his memory is only the shadow of a cloud moving across the prairie, will these shores and forests still be here? Will there be any of the spirit of my people left?

We love this earth as a newborn loves its mother’s heartbeat. So, if we sell you our land, love it as we have loved it. Care for it, as we have cared for it. Hold in your mind the memory of the land as it is when you receive it. Preserve the land for all children, and love it, as God loves us.

As we are part of the land, you too are part of the land. This earth is precious to us. It is also precious to you.

Was George Washington wrong ?

“The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference. They deserve a place of honour with all that is good” George Washington.

The United States, with less than 5 percent of the world’s population, has about 35–50 percent of the world’s civilian-owned guns, ranking number one in firearms per capita. The United States also has the highest homicide-by-firearm rate among the world’s most developed nations. (No evil restrained here)

There were 1.5 million of them between 1968 and 2017 – that’s higher than the number of soldiers killed in every US conflict since the American War for Independence in 1775. (No evil restrained here)

In 2020 alone, more than 45,000 Americans died at the end of a barrel of a gun, whether by homicide or suicide, more than any other year on record. The figure represents a 25% increase from five years prior, and a 43% increase from 2010 (No evil restrained here)

A separate study, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2021, linked a rise in gun ownership during the pandemic to higher rates of gun injuries among – and inflicted by – children. (No evil restrained here)

A 2016 study published in the American Journal of Public Health found there was a strong relationship between higher levels of gun ownership in a state and higher firearm suicide rates for both men and women. (No evil restrained here)

“The facts above prove …” says the Lay Pope… “that the very atmosphere of firearms everywhere and anywhere promotes evil interference. They deserve a place of shame with all that is bad”

The Lay Pope has decreed that Bishop Robert J McManus can no longer call himself a Catholic

If Jesus were alive today He would take the knee adorned with a Pride flag.

The recent decree by Robert J. McManus , Bishop of the Diocese of Worcester in Massachusetts , prohibiting a Jesuit school for underprivileged boys  “from identifying itself as a ‘Catholic’ school” or using “the title ‘Catholic’ to describe itself.” is ‘a terrible error in judgement.’

The decree says that the Nativity school can no longer celebrate Mass, sacraments and sacramentals and they cannot be sponsored by Nativity School in any church building or chapel within the Diocese of Worcester.

It was issued after the school ignored warning letters from the Bishop and continued to fly Pride and Black Lives Matter flags. He wrote that ”As the Bishop of this diocese, I must teach that it is imperative that a Catholic School use imagery and symbols which are reflective of that school’s values and principles so as to be clear with young people who are being spiritually and morally formed for the future. ”

Condemning the Bishop’s actions Nativity President Thomas McKenney said the school would continue to fly both flags “to give visible witness to the school’s solidarity with our students, families, and their communities.” Defending the schools decision to honour the wishes of its pupils he added “As a multicultural school, the flags represent the inclusion and respect of all people,” “These flags simply state that all are welcome at Nativity and this value of inclusion is rooted in Catholic teaching. Commitment to our mission, grounded and animated by Gospel values, Catholic Social Teaching, and our Jesuit heritage compels us to do so.”

The Lay Pope ( thelaypope.com ) has called for the decree to be overturned and for the Bishop to be prohibited from identifying himself as a Catholic , using the title of Bishop, and prevented from saying Mass or celebrating the sacraments. In a statement he said : ” ….. denying these underprivileged and marginalised Catholic children the right to hear Mass and celebrate the sacraments in their school is at fundamental odds with the teachings of our Saviour Jesus Christ . If the Bishop truly believes that a sin has been committed by the schools refusal to remove inclusive flags the very last thing he should take is to turn his back on them and walk away. He should do what Jesus would do and go to the school and embrace them , inspire them with his words and try to help them to see the error of their ways. Jesus was attracted to sinners like a fish to water.”

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. (1Timothy 1:15)

I believe this school is Christ centred but if the Bishop believes otherwise then he needs to act like Christ and go to them to talk face to face with them not to condemn innocent children and take away their daily school encounters with our Saviour. Christ would not close the school to Christian influence, He would get up close and personal with every student and teacher in the place every hour of every day. I wonder how many of these children may have one day become priests but who will now turn away from God because Bishop McManus tells them God has turned away from them. But you see Bishop McManus has an insurmountable problem in addressing this matter in the way Christ would. That is because the first young child the Bishop met in the corridors of Nativity middle school Wisconsin would enlighten him to the true meaning of Christus Veritatus Splendor: The splendid Truth that if Jesus walked into his school he would take the knee adorned with the Pride flag. That is a splendid Truth that the Bishop sadly cannot comprehend .

There is perhaps a more sinister angle to this most recent example of senior Catholic clergy undermining Pope Francis. If you can put aside the damage that this decree will have on the children of Nativity themselves it is almost as if some Catholic clergy are painstakingly looking for opportunities to undermine Pope Francis and then mobilising a well organised media machine which is on a war footing to assault his position as soon as he speaks out. The Bishop’s action is in direct contradiction to Pope Francis’ ambitions for a more inclusive church, and will no doubt be seen as yet another example of traditionlists “gagging” the church’s attempts to modernize. The Pope has lamented “The number of groups of ‘restorers’—for example, in the United States there are many—is significant,” Speaking to the editors of the Jesuit journal La Civilta Cattolica he said that “Restorationism has come to gag the council.” In a recent letter to Fr. James Martin on the occasion of the Outreach LGBTQ Catholic Ministry Conference, he encouraged those who minister to the L.G.B.T. “flock” to approach them in the “style of God,” which he described as incorporating “closeness, compassion and tenderness.”

In isolation Bishop McManus’ decree seems fairly innocuous , an ill informed error of judgement but on closer inspection it appears to have the ‘odour of the Devil’ about it. It is no coincidence that at a time when Francis says that Christ would not turn away members of the LGBTQ+ community a senior cleric issues an episcopal decree imposing the highest sanctions it can on a Catholic school for daring to fly inclusive flags. This is a direct challenge to the Popes authority and a rebuke of the direction that he is taking the Church. These are not the actions of an isolated Bishop … These are the actions of a traditionalist footsoldier eager to wage war on a modernising Church which is striving to embrace an inclusive Christ centred future. It is indicative of a concerted effort by some to close down the parameters of our Church’s Synod on Synodality effectively limiting discussions to non contentious matters and ruling out any chance of progress on those issues that the lay faithful tell us matter most . The stakes are high. If ever there was a time to invoke the Holy Spirits support and guidance on how we should respond to the growing ‘ medieval mindset ‘ exemplified by the likes of Bishop McManus it is now.

O Glorious St. Joseph, model of all those who are devoted to labour, guide me to achieve the grace to work conscientiously, putting the call of duty above my natural inclinations, to work with gratitude and joy, in a spirit of penance for the remission of my sins, considering it an honour to employ and develop by means of labor the gifts received from God, to work with order, peace, moderation and patience, without ever shrinking from weariness and difficulties, to work above all with purity of intention and detachment from self, having always death before my eyes and the account that I must render of time lost, of talents wasted, of good omitted, of vain complacency in success, so fatal to the work of God. All for Jesus, all through Mary, all after thine example, O Patriarch, St. Joseph. Such shall be my motto in life and in death. Amen

It is time for the Pope to ex communicate Catholics who carry guns.

Donald Trump continues to criticise those who have called for stricter gun laws.

Speaking at the National Rifle Association convention in Houston Texas, barely days after 19 children and two teachers were shot dead at a primary school in the city of Uvalde, Texas, Donald Trump, the former US president poured scorn on those who “rush to shift blame away from the villains who commit acts of mass violence” and “to place that blame onto the shoulders of millions of peaceful law-abiding citizens who belong to organisations such as our wonderful NRA”. He called for a minute of silence whilst he read out the names of the 19 children and 2 teachers massacred by a blitzkrieg of bullets fired from weapons that the NRA argues keep America safe. Each name he read out was punctuated by the toll of a bell. Given the setting it would have been more fitting if they had used gunshots. He refused to acknowledge any connection with the massacre of these innocents and the ease with which the gunman accessed the assault rifle he used. He criticised the “now familiar parade of cynical politicians seeking to exploit the tears of sobbing families to increase their own power and take away our constitutional rights” and the “grotesque effort by some in our society to use the suffering of others to advance their own extreme political agenda” He didnt mention the size of the fee he had received as guest speaker or the scores of politicians, such as Ted Cruz whose political careers are underpinned by NRA money. Ironically he forgot to mention that the NRA had banned anyone from carrying a gun during the convention. If you listen to the politicians below repeating the mantra that their NRA paymasters have commissioned you will realise that if it is left to them it is simply a matter of time before we hear the devastating news of yet another Uvalde or Virginia Tech or sandy Hook or ………………. The simple fact is that too many American politicians who could stop this carnage being repeated have been bought by the gun lobby. It is time for the Pope to act to save more children from being butchered . It is time for Catholic Canon Law to be updated to include the crime of carrying a gun punishable by ex communication. There is absolutely no justification for a Catholic who purports to follow Jesus, the Prince of Peace, to a carry a gun. Furthermore the Pope should instruct the Bishops in America to make the next election a one issue vote ….. reform of the American constitution to remove Article 2 ‘ The right to carry arms ‘. Watch how quickly those politicians who champion weapons of mass murder suddenly change their minds when millions of Catholic voters tell them to lay down their arms. As Catholics we are compelled by Christ himself to Love, to protect the poor and vulnerable. Just imagine how vulnerable those beautiful children and their teachers must have been when faced with the horror unfolding before them. It is an unbearable thought…. simply unbearable. When these atrocities happen we often hear about the incredible bravery of teachers who stand in front of their children giving the ultimate sacrifice to protect them. My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ it is time for us to stand up and confront those who are truly culpable in these crimes against humanity. Those who assault us with intrigue, lies and deceit. Stand up and protect your children and Vote them out. In the name of Christ our Saviour you are compelled to lay down your arms and bring Peace to your nation.

Love is never boastful nor conceited nor rude; never selfish, not quick to take offence. Love takes no score of wrongs; does not gloat over others men’s sins but delights in the Truth. There is nothing Love cannot face; there is no limit to its Faith, its Hope and its Endurance.”
1 Corinthians 13: 1-7

Only God , and God alone , can deny Communion

The recent decision by the Archbishop of San Francisco, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, to deny Communion to the House speaker Nancy Pelosi is a grave error . Salvatore needs to understand that only God can deny someone Communion. Those who receive the Eucharist having committed grave sins are not blessed with the Body and Blood of our Saviour… God knows what is in their hearts and will Himself judge whether to join in Communion with them. If the Almighty finds them wanting then it is only common bread that touches their tongue not the sacred Eucharistic Sacrament. Reflect on this for one moment. Given the scale of horrendous world wide Catholic clerical abuse that has scandalised the Catholic Church for decades can you imagine how many paedophile priests have taken the Eucharist … often on a daily basis . When they do this do you truly believe that they are in Communion . Do you honestly believe that fingers which would have recently grotesquely abused innocent children would be allowed to touch the sacred Body and Blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ. When such as these receive the Eucharist they taste simple bread and it is harsh and bitter on their tongues. God alone decides who receives the Grace and Joy of transubstantiation. It borders on being a mortal sin for Archbishop Cordileone to decide it is he who judges who is worthy to Commune with God. We should appreciate that the Archbishop is having a crisis of conscience because of the heartbreak and agony of abortion. I share his pain and conflict but he has made a grave mis – judgement. He deserves some Peace . Denying Communion is not the way to address the rights of the unborn. He should follow our Blessed Pope Francis’ guidance and never deny anyone the Eucharist. We should pray that the Archbishop leaves this sacred decision in God’s safe hands.

“The Eucharist, although it is the fullness of sacramental life, is not a prize for the perfect but a powerful medicine and nourishment for the weak” Pope Francis Evangelii Gaudium

Manifesto Pledge:

If I am elected Pope I will issue a Papal decree prohibiting any priest, bishop, archbishop or cardinal from denying Communion to anyone.
